I don’t know about you all but in between weekly trips to queue at the grocery store I am trying to use this time to explore some neglected creative outlets. And one thing that has helped me is settling into my new office space (pictured above), which consists of a borrowed desk from the downstairs museum and is located in our walk-in closet, of all places.
Linda needed our proper desk for all her corporate equipment and I desired a quieter space than the kitchen table. This setup affords me the silence I crave and the views out to Monhegan Island supply all the inspiration I could ever need. But the biggest benefit I have discovered is simply a space to call home that I frequent faithfully.
Another contributor to my breakthrough in creativity has been living this past year without cable television or Twitter. Linda and I decided before moving out here to Marshall Point that we wanted to embrace as much of the unique experience of living here as possible, and that meant cutting the cord and logging off social media.
The result has been renewed perspective and greater creative output, not the least of which has been the launch of an online ministry we are calling The Beacon, named intentionally after our home here at the lighthouse. You can check it out at www.thebeaconministry.com or www.vimeo.com/thebeaconministry.
As it turns out, we were ahead of the curve when it comes to distance learning, as we launched on 02/02/2020, before the virus hit the fan, so to speak. We presently are sharing brief videos designed to help folks with queries about faith and related issues. As a couple of friends were questioning our unconventional methods, I was reminded of a great quote from Teddy Roosevelt:
“It is not the critic who counts…the credit belongs to the man who is actually in the arena…who does actually strive to do the deeds; who knows great enthusiasms, the great devotions; who spends himself in a worthy cause…so that his place shall never be with those cold and timid souls who neither know victory nor defeat.” So, amen to that!
For the record I recently rejoined Twitter, namely to share about The Beacon, so you can catch up with me there at www.twitter.com/seanfowlds. I also am making good progress on my latest book project, so stay tuned for more exciting news about that. And last but not least, allow me to encourage you to pursue whatever your passion may be and regardless of what the naysayers might suggest!
